Key takeaways

  • Renovation cleaning and after construction cleaning overlap; scope is what really differs.
  • The three passes are rough clean, detail clean and final touch-up.
  • A single-room refit usually needs one detail pass plus the adjoining rooms.
  • A gut remodel or new build justifies all three passes and two floor passes.
  • Scope drives price: dust level, passes, glazing, floor type and site access.

Renovation cleaning vs after construction cleaning: which one do you need?

8 sections of this guide, as one print-ready sheet. Headings, figures and footnotes included.

People use renovation cleaning and after construction cleaning to mean the same thing, and often they overlap. The practical difference is scope: how much of the building was disturbed, how much dust was generated, and how many passes the site needs before anyone can use it.

The three passes

Rough clean

Happens while work is still finishing. Large debris, offcuts, packaging and waste are removed and floors are cleared so the remaining trades can work safely. Nothing is polished at this stage — it would only be re-dirtied.

Detail clean

The main pass, once the last trade has left. Every surface is dust-removed, joinery is cleaned inside and out, glass and frames are done, fittings are degreased and floors are cleaned. This is the pass most people mean when they book a post-construction clean.

Final touch-up

A short pass immediately before handover or move-in. Fingerprints, smudges and dust that resettled overnight are removed so the space shows at its best.

Single-room renovation

A new bathroom or a kitchen refit usually needs one detail pass plus a check of the rooms either side, because dust escapes through doorways and along corridors however well the area was sealed. Protective sheeting, tape residue and paint specks are the usual leftovers, along with grout haze on new tiling.

Whole-property build or gut remodel

Here all three passes make sense. Dust has reached every room, HVAC runs need attention, windows carry film and labels throughout, and floors typically need two passes on separate days. This is also where a filtered-vacuum approach matters most, since dust from cutting concrete and masonry can contain respirable crystalline silica, which OSHA regulates for respiratory reasons.

How to decide

Ask three questions. Was structural or wet work involved, or only surface finishing? Did dust reach beyond the work area? Is anyone moving in, photographing or handing over immediately afterwards? One yes points to a detail clean; all three point to the full phased approach.

What to have ready

Waste should be removed by the contractor before the clean, water and power should be on, and protective coverings should be lifted. A clean crew that has to clear a skip's worth of material first is spending your time on the wrong task.

Getting an accurate quote

Scope, not room count, drives the price: level of dust, number of passes, glazing, floor type and access. A walkthrough or clear photos give a far more reliable figure than a description over the phone. Current service pricing is published on our prices page.

Frequently asked questions

Is renovation cleaning the same as after construction cleaning?
They overlap. Both remove building dust and residue; the difference is scope, from a single refitted room up to a whole-property build needing three separate passes.
Do I need all three cleaning passes?
Only when dust reached the whole property. A single-room renovation usually needs one detail pass plus a check of the adjoining rooms.
What should be done before the cleaners arrive?
Contractor waste removed, protective coverings lifted, and water and power switched on.
